ORC Spring 2020: Master Bedroom Final Reveal
It’s finally here – The final reveal! Who knew a freakin’ bedroom would take this much work to transform? I, for one, grossly underestimated what goes into a One Room Challenge. On that note, take a moment to hop on over to the ORC blog and check out what other talented creators have done with their spaces in this challenge, then come on back here and hang out with us. Our Master Bedroom Reveal
First things first, the bed. Remember when our bedroom looked like this?
Well, here’s how it looks now.

The MASTER BEDROOM Foundation: The Bed and Neutral Walls
If you remember, we had to design the room around the existing bed, which is quite traditional and bulky, but channeling our inner RH Style, we came up with this!

Painting the room white and adding custom molding in the same color created a neutral foundation for budding out our room design. We pulled an 8 x 10 rug under our king size bed which anchored the space.
MASTER BEDROOM Art
Floating small watercolor art pieces in large thin black frames from target helped us maintain a minimalist feel. (It also saved me from having to purchase too many custom cut mats.)

Not so the case with the art work over our bed. This wide and narrow watercolor scene from Paris cost me a brand new frame and $16 mat: completely worth it.

MASTER BEDROOM Side Tables
Now, let’s talk about these side tables. You’ll notice, they don’t match. That’s because we only 1/2 followed the original design plan.

I was unable to locate the perfect black metal night stands that didn’t also liquidate my bank account so we settled for these world market marble ones. Then we decided the marble side tables looked a bit feminine on Uriah’s side of the bed.

Uriah loved the Fulton desk from Restoration Hardware, but due to cost and scale, it didn’t work for our space. A last minute decision caused us to reach out to a local welder, Dunn Welding Service, out of Angier, NC and he fabricated a metal frame out of square stock. Literally two days before this reveal, the frame was finished, Uriah quickly made a desktop from pine wood purchased from Home Depot and stained it in Early American stain by Varathane.

Now, I have a more feminine looking nightstand on my side and he has a functional, masculine desk on his. Although neither are the same shape, both pieces are the same scale and both have a black base, so it works!
Part of the reason I landed on the marble table is how it looked next to my gold plated almost full length mirror. (Uriah made a custom tripod stand raise it up.)

Not to mention, the combination of gold, marble and olive green give me those emoji heart eyes.
MASTER BEDROOM Textiles: Curtains and Linens

These curtains from Sand Snow Linen were the biggest purchase of this room makeover and also went against our original plan of all white everything. I realized mid-project that my design was very one sided. I wanted a bedroom both of us would love. Going darker on the curtains was a scary move, but I honestly couldn’t be happier with the decision.

I couldn’t go dark on the curtains and not bring it into the bed linens, so I chose this charcoal grey linen duvet set on Amazon with amazing reviews. Based on a Chris Loves Julia recommendation, I also bought this weighted blanket for our bed that you can’t see pictured. It’s like sleeping in a hug and it is life changing: not being dramatic at all.

In this corner, we moved the blue desk out and the leather lounger in from the living room.
Now for the Sitting Room
Remember the sitting room before?

Our cozy sitting room still has the same couch. No, I couldn’t pull the trigger on a new one at the moment. But its soft shade of green compliments the curtains somehow. The board and batten feature with shelf serves a purpose and adds a focal point, especially with that Justina Blakeney fixture in front of it.

This gallery wall was hard, I procrastinated for DAYS, but I finally did it. Honestly the turning point was when I gave myself permission to change my mind in the future. Often I feel stuck on design decisions in my own home because I feel like once I choose there’s no going back. But that’s a lie!

It was all worth it
Despite the toll this room took on both of us, when we walk into our master bedroom now it puts a smile on our face. It was all worth it. Can you believe we’ve already started dreaming up what room we’ll take on next?
I hope you enjoyed following along in this challenge, that you learned something new and feel inspired to take on a space of your own.
